We took the night train with a 'couchette' for 6 (yes, that was cozy - but we're all family!) from Venice to Geneva, Switzerland. The conductor mistakenly thought we were going all the way to Geneva, when really we wanted to disembark in Lausanne and catch a connection to Bern. The conductor forgot to awaken us. Thankfully - Norm woke up and stepped into the corridor to ask what time we arrive in Luasanne - the conductor replied, "five minutes". Wow, did we scramble to wake up kids, find shoes, pack backpacks etc. We were throwing backpacks out the windows as we entered the station. The kids stumbled off the train, half awake, clutching everything they could carry - as the train pulled away - the conductor leaned out the window shouting, "no worries", "you got it all", "you got it all". And we really did, it was amazing ! |

This photo was taken from the Rose Garden in Bern. The roses were not yet in bloom during April, but the trees had beautiful blossoms on them. In the background you can see the Zytglogge or clocktower |
Just a short walk down the path from the Rose Garden is the Barengraben or bearpit. It has been home to the Bern bears since the early sixteenth century. Our family enjoyed the multimedia presentation at the museum that described how Bern began life as a fortress town people by knights. It was very entertaining and informative. |
Just a short train ride southeast of Bern is the small picturesque town of Thun, nestled in the crook of the river. We spent some time sharing the last of our Ritz crackers with the swans, geese and ducks on this beautiful pond. |
Thun comes complete with it's own Schloss, which houses a wonderful midevil museum . |
