Some Inexpensive hotels we recommend
We enjoyed all our hotels - just lucky I guess.  They were definantly inexpensive (traveling with two adults and four children is costly - we saved money wherever we could).  They were each clean, and charming in their own way.
Paris - Hotel Printemps (31 Rue Commerce in the 15th) a few blocks from the Eiffel Tower, my 8 and 11 year olds girls could walk to the tower by themselves.  Quiet neighborhood with wonderful market and boulangeries where we could buy breakfast each morning.  Older, could use updating, but with a charming small lobby.  It was also very comfortable if you don't mind peeling paint and mismatched wallpaper.  Tel 01.45.79.83.36  fax 01.45.79.84.88
Vernazza -
A "Camera Libre"
right off the main plaza.

I believe the woman we made arrangements with was Franca Maria.  She speaks little English, but we communicated very well.  We had all six of us in one room.  It was very large and modern, newly tiled, a small kitchenette, newly remodeled bath with nicely tiled shower.  We paid 30,000 IL per person per night.  The waves crashed on the rocks right outside our window.  The children enjoyed counting the cats in the plaza from the window.
Arles - France
Hotel Terminus and Van Gogh

This hotel is located just a block from the train station, just outside the city walls.  Our triple w/bath was 270 FF a night, and the double w/bath at 220 FF.  Each room is decorated in a Van Gogh color scheme.  We visited at the end of March, and the hotel was clean and quiet.

There is a "Monoprix" with a BankOMat across the street.  The bus station is across the street from the train station.
Very helpful friendly staff, speaking English quite well.  We actually stayed there twice, the 1st four nights of our trip we had a triple with bath and a double without bath.  When we returned to Paris, we had three doubles all off the same hallway, two of them with baths.  Very reasonably priced at 160 FF double no bath, 210 FF double w/bath, 300 FF triple w/bath.  They appeared to be very popular, as they were full most every night..

How did we find it?
On the recommendation of  friends, we knocked on the green door, just to the right as you come into the main plaza from the train station, and asked if they had rooms for rent.
Rome - Bed & Breakfast
"Sunshine House"

This place was about a 5 min walk from Termini on Via Rattazzi.  Someone from the "tourist information" station in Termini helped us find this room.  Our room shared a nice breakfast area, and a very modern hallway bath.  The room was streetside, but very quiet with sound proof windows.  The room also included a TV (our first), and telephone.  It was located on the 6th floor, with an elevator that worked somewhat undependably.

We found it convenient to be nearby Station Termini with our children, all the city buses stopped there as well as the metro.  Below the station is a big shopping mall with many fun stores and a grocery.  We paid 70.000 IL per night for the six of us with breakfast included.  A great deal in Rome!

Bern
Pension Martahaus
Wyttenbachstr. 22a

This was a wonderful place located a few blocks north of the city center, about a 10 minute walk from the station.  The rooms were clean and modern.  Some with TV and telephones.  The price included a continental breakfast in a large breakfast room with a piano (which my children enjoyed).  The small elevator worked very well, the rooms were very well lit with large windows.  And best of all  - the beds were made up with wonderful, fluffy duvet comforters.  The staff spoke excellent English and were very helpful.  They had laundry facilities available, and the maid did our laundry for 8 SF a load.

Room prices were - Quad without bath 140 SF ( they decreased the rate from 170 SF as two of the occupants were children).  Double w/bath 120 SF.  The hallway baths were clean and modern, with separate rooms for WC and shower..

This was the most expensive hotel we stayed in.  It backed up to the chateau and we couldn't resist.  It had a lovely large lobby with sitting area, and very large breakfast room.  The staff was friendly, helpful, and spoke excellent English.  Our room were large (something we hadn't encountered thus far in Europe), had modern baths, TV and telephones.  Our double with two twins w/full bath was 410 FF, our triple w/shower/bath was 360 FF.  Our views of the chateau were wonderful, and very charming.  Breakfast was separate at 35 FF per person but was a very good continental breakfast with "to die for" hot chocolate.
